Aluminium Stool (AS-24)

Aluminium Stool (AS-24)

Description

AS-24 serves as both a stool and a side table designed for everyday interior use.
Its body is entirely made of aluminium, showcasing an industrial aesthetic with flat surfaces, precise bends, and a straightforward construction.

The design unites strong geometric shapes with contrasting sharp lines and smoother curves, resulting in a modern object that is functional and visually appealing.

Lightweight and practical, the folding mechanism allows the stool to collapse into a flat form for easy storage and transport. When needed, it unfolds rapidly without any hassle.

The structure consists of three bent aluminium parts that lock together securely without requiring any tools, making setup and takedown simple.

Other information

The design process

Made entirely from 100% sheet aluminium, AS-24 reflects the principles I set for my work.

I committed to using only one material, which meant designing hinges, locking systems, and every other component from sheet aluminium alone.

This constraint pushed my understanding of the metal’s capabilities and limitations.

Working through trial and error helped me uncover new methods and refine the aluminium’s natural properties.

The mechanism relies on aluminium’s natural spring-back quality to provide a reliable locking system. This system permits the sides to slide easily together while firmly keeping them connected.

Countless iterations and adjustments were made until the system performed consistently under everyday conditions.

A persistent design element is the hinge. It is formed by cutting an opening into the seat that then bends around one of the sides.

I recall a discussion with the craftsman Metal-Henning, who remarked that the hinge could only be bent by hand.

This manual bending is not only essential to attach the top securely to the sides but also adds a personalized quality to each stool.

Inspection certificate for aluminum:

Material information: AS-24, Aluminum 5754

AS-24 is made from aluminum alloy 5754, known for its strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent workability. The material is widely used in both industry and design because of its durability and aesthetic quality.

Specifications:

Alloy: 5754

Temper: O (Annealed)

Thickness: 3.0 mm

Width: 1500 mm

Surface: Matte aluminum

Mechanical properties:

Tensile strength (Rm): 219 MPa

Yield strength (Rp0.2): 103 MPa

Elongation at break (A50): 25.9 percent

What does this mean?

The material is strong and resistant, which makes it suitable for design and structural applications.

Chemical composition:

Element

Content (percent)

Magnesium (Mg): 2.9

Manganese (Mn): 0.31

Silicon (Si): 0.25

Iron (Fe): 0.32

Copper (Cu): 0.05

Zinc (Zn): 0.04

Titanium (Ti): 0.03

Chromium (Cr): 0.05

Why is this important?

The magnesium content gives the 5754 alloy excellent corrosion and wear resistance, which makes AS-24 ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.

Certifications and standards

AS-24 meets the following standards and quality requirements:

EN 485-1+2+4, EN 515, EN 573-3, EN 15088

ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management), IATF 16949 (automotive industry)

Maintenance

It is possible to disassemble the stool for a deeper cleaning, if needed, although keeping the assembly intact minimizes the risk of creating scratches.

Wipe the surfaces with water.

Avoid water with high lime content as it may leave marks.

After cleaning, apply a clear metal oil such as WD-40 to saturate the surface and reduce visible fingerprints.

Finish by wiping down the entire area with a clean, dry cloth to remove any excess oil and ensure the aluminium maintains its natural luster.
